The Flaming Lips - Peace Sword

The Flaming Lips never stop, and this time they return with a dramatic EP including a song for the upcoming movie Ender’s Game.

The EP, titled Peace Sword is a 35 minute journey of sci-fi and love. The title track, 'Peace Sword (Open Your Heart)' is the only one that appears in the movie Ender’s Game, while the rest of the EP follows similar themes but takes its own direction.

The opening track is very alien space-like, nothing new to the Flaming Lips and certainly a nice fit for the movie. There is a very melodic flute riff throughout the song, with Wayne gently telling the listener to “open your heart to me”.

The second track is where the EP strays from movie soundtrack material to more Flaming Lips-esque weirdness. 'If They Move, Shoot ‘Em' is much more instrumental, with trippy melodies and drumming throughout the song, only gently touched by Wayne’s vocals.

The entire EP finds the listener in a somber daze. While the other songs were not used on the movie soundtrack, they all have a very fitting place on the EP.

Track 'Is The Black At The End Good?' exemplifies the feeling of the album. “Everywhere that love is, that’s where I will be”, sings Wayne in the very emotion-filled 6-minute track.

Overall the EP is still a bit lighter than most of the bands material. It is clear that they had a good time mashing together sounds and feelings to create this.

Track 'Think Like A Machine, Not A Boy' and 'Wolf Children' lead listeners into the final track, a ten minute jam filled with even more alien infused sounds. “Assassin Beetle - The Dream Is Ending” brings the EP to a close, leaving listeners probably as confused as they were at the start.

Needless to say, the Flaming Lips are no strangers to sci-fi and jams. This EP is not as heavy as other material, while still managing to incorporate the distinct feel of the Flaming Lips.
