WIN WIN - Primaries

Brooklyn trio WIN WIN creates genre-bending electro pop on their third album “Primaries”.

In the growing world of electronic music, finding something unique is increasingly difficult. Primaries, the latest release by Brooklyn trio WIN WIN looks to create something outside of the mold but ultimately created an album that seems a little disjointed.

WIN WIN is a trio consisting of members Alex Epton (XXX¢hange), Chris Devlin and Ryan Scianino (Ghostdad). Primaries is their third LP, following Double Vision (2012) and WIN WIN (2011). This album is somewhat similar to Double Vision but with an even larger focus on the vocals. Primaries is definitely genre-bending, it’s hard to classify this as anything but electronic. The instrumentation on the album includes mostly electronic beats and instruments but also adds in some drums and guitars, along with the vocals and some vocal effects.

A somewhat confusing mix of electro and psych-rock, Primaries switches back and forth between musical styles from song to song with little crossover. Not sticking to a singular genre keeps the music interesting, but as a consequence the flow of the album is somewhat jarring from song to song. The album begins with a heavily electronic influence, but by the song “Messages”, the album has almost entirely turned into a form of psych-rock with a hint of electronic, and then slowly back to purely electronic by the end of the album, including the last song, “Amoeba”.

It is unusual to hear a band on their third album still sounding like they’re not sure what sound they wish to create, but maybe this non-conformity is just part of who WIN WIN is. “Don’t Freak Out” is a good blend of the different styles that WIN WIN creates, it just leaves you wanting that from some of the other records.

Overall, Primaries certainly is unique among other electronic music but maybe not for the right reasons. If this album had a little bit more between songs, the album might make a little bit more sense.
